The Importance of Baby Shower Food:
One of the most important things on your to do list is deciding on the fare.  Whatever you choose to serve at a baby shower can make a lasting impression on the guests who will attend and most significantly the mother-to-be. Baby shower food can be a work of art all on its own, but not to worry, with a little thought and a few of the insider tips below, the menu you serve up will easily be remembered as a masterpiece.

Where to Begin
The possibilities are limitless when it comes to food. You first need to decide how big or small the shower is going to be. Are you going to completely spoil the mommy-to-be? Or are you planning a more modest affair? A few options are a full meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner), appetizers only, desserts only, or possibly a light afternoon tea. Sit down and brainstorm a little, think about who is attending and you may come up with some good ideas that you won’t find anywhere else. After you settle on the type of spread decide on who can help you prepare it and what your budget will be. You’ve heard the saying, “many hands make light work”, now put it into practice and enlist the help of some close friends or family.

Tips and Tricks

  • You don’t have to serve a meal if you don’t want to.  Instead, pastry and deli trays or other small finger food purchased from the market can be the perfect solution to a last minute shower or for the chronic procrastinator.
  • Another great option is going pot luck style and having each guest bring a dish. This is extremely helpful but only recommended if you as the host know each guest quite well. Mention the pot luck plan in the invitation or on the phone when you call to invite and when you receive an rsvp either ask what type of food or drink they can bring or tell them what to bring. They may do a side dish, a main dish, a bread, dessert, or even drinks. Make sure you know what everyone is bringing so there isn’t too much of one thing. This approach makes a budget that much easier to meet.

  • Basing the food on the theme of the shower is also an excellent idea if you have a theme. For example, a baby duck theme could have yellow icing on cupcakes or a (clean) rubber ducky on a cake. A baby girl pink theme could feature all foods and drinks that are pink; pink lemonade, strawberries or a pink plate for the cheese platter.

  • Try to plan the majority of the food around the mommy-to-be’s favorites. She is the one that should be catered to on this day and that means keeping her happy and well fed!  If you aren’t sure of her faves, then ask someone that’s a bit closer to her for their opinion.

  • When in doubt have a wide assortment of food and drinks to choose from. Popular baby shower food and drinks are mini cupcakes, baby themed cakes, veggies and dip, tropical homemade punch, crab cakes, or deviled eggs.

    Get Help
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and that includes help from a local supermarket, bakery, or frozen deli. Having the party catered can be an expensive option but an immense help. Remember that others will most likely love to help you to set up, serve and possibly even prepare. All you really need is a good wing man (or woman in this case) to help keep you organized. Above all, have fun!
